How to use Hey Jango for the things people ask about most. Hey Jango is for iPhone. Features arrive with each update, so the newest ones may not be in your version yet: if you do not see something, update the app first.
Start here
Talk to Jango
Start with “Hey Jango” or just Jango's name, then say what you want in one go. Jango waits a little longer after “and”, “so” or “um” than after a finished question, so you can think while you speak. “Thanks” or “that's all” ends the chat.
- Tap the orb to start listening yourself. A listen you open by tapping the orb stays open for up to 3 minutes waiting for your first words, so you can speak when you are ready.
- Mute is the button next to the orb. While you are muted Jango says it is not listening, until you tap it again. “Keep quiet” also keeps Jango quiet until you say its name.
- Talking to someone else? Say “I was talking to…”, “I am talking with…”, “I am on a call” or “that was not for you”, or “Not you”. Jango stays out of that turn.
- Words Jango took for side talk stay on screen in grey, and you can tap them to send them anyway.
If it does not hear you: check that Jango is allowed to use the microphone in iPhone Settings and that you have not muted it (the Mute button next to the orb). If the orb says Listening but nothing answers, tell us through the support form below, with the time it happened and what you said.
Jango shows that it heard you, on every screen
On any screen, not just the main one, when you start with Jango's name the floating orb comes up at once, and you feel a light tap beside the listening sound. Your words are kept in the main chat as well, so you can find them there. The orb and the tap are skipped while listening sounds are off, the microphone is muted, quiet mode is on, you are on a call, or the app is behind another app.
Where Hey Jango works
Hey Jango is an iPhone app. You can also use your Jango in a web browser (see Use Jango on a computer). There is no Android app yet, and no CarPlay, iPad or Apple Watch version.
Reply in the thread, with the subject and the earlier mails
Say “Send an email to Priya saying…” and Jango first looks for an earlier email with that person. If it finds one, the draft is a reply in that thread, to the same people (everyone on the email, unless you say not to). Only when there is no earlier email does it make a new one, and it tells you so.
- The draft always shows its Subject: “Re:” and the original subject for a reply. A new email with no subject shows “No subject yet. Tap Edit to add one.”
- Under the draft, Earlier in this thread lists up to 10 earlier messages, newest first, with quoted lines cut. Tap it to open the whole draft and scroll through them. They are for reading only.
- If the thread could not be opened, the card says so and the reply goes out as before.
A short wait with Undo before an email is sent
When you tap Send, or say “send it”, on an email that this phone sends itself, a bar counts down (5 seconds unless you change it) with one big Undo, and Jango says “Sending to Priya. Say cancel to stop it.”
- To stop it: tap Undo, or say “cancel”, “stop”, “undo”, “don't send” or “no”. Nothing is sent and the draft stays on the card.
- To change the wait: in Settings, where you connect your mailboxes, choose Wait before sending email: off, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. You can also ask Jango to change it.
- If you move on to another request, or leave the app, during the wait, the email you approved is sent at once. It is not dropped.
- An email you scheduled for later keeps its own time and has no wait.
Good to know: if the app is force-closed during the wait, the email is not sent. The wait is only a few seconds.
Put a sender in a box
For a company that sends you a lot of marketing but also mail you cannot miss, such as a bank or a card company. In a box, that sender's newsletters and offers sit in one quiet row with a count, with no notification and no badge. A one-time code, a security or fraud alert, a failed or due payment, a delivery or ride arriving, a flight check-in or gate change, a deadline, and replies in a conversation you wrote in are still pulled to the top of your inbox, with the reason, and still notify you.
- Put one in a box: press and hold an email and choose Put <sender> in a box. Or say “Put American Express in a box” or “Box the Uber emails”.
- Take it out: the box row has Take out of box, or say “Take American Express out of the box”. “Undo” puts the last change back. “What is in a box?” lists them.
- You decide what is urgent: on the box, Always urgent, Never urgent or Let Jango decide. By voice: “Always treat mail from American Express as urgent”.
- Unsubscribe is on the box too.
Words like “urgent”, “last chance” and “ends tonight” never make a mail urgent. A box never deletes, archives or moves anything in your mailbox: it only groups what you see on your phone. Mail it is not sure about stays in the inbox where it was. Quiet mail from boxed senders is listed under Quiet mail for 14 days.
Deleted and unsubscribed mail stays gone
When you delete or archive an email, your phone writes that down before the Undo wait ends, and the email stays out of your list while your mailbox catches up, even if the app is closed, you are offline, or Outlook or Gmail is slow to answer. It shows again only if your mailbox itself lists it back in that folder, for example because you restored it in another app.
- If your mailbox could not do it, Jango tells you why in plain words (for example “The Outlook sign-in needs renewing” or “No connection”), keeps the email hidden and tries again later: after 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour and 6 hours, up to 8 times.
- If it says the sign-in needs renewing or has not allowed this app, reconnect that mailbox in Mail settings. The email stays hidden until you do, and is then done.
- Unsubscribe asks the sender to stop and hides that sender's mailing-list mail on your phone for 14 days (some senders take a few days to stop). Jango then asks whether to clear the mail already here: Move to Trash, Archive or Keep in my mailbox. Nothing is deleted unless you choose, and Trash has Undo.
- If a sender gives no way to unsubscribe, the screen says so: “This sender does not say how to unsubscribe.”
New-mail notifications and Quiet mail
In Settings, Notifications, New mail choose off, important only, or all new email (with quiet hours). Each notification can carry one more line from the email and a label under the sender: Important, Newsletter or promotion, Possible spam or Unimportant. Mail held back from notifications is listed under Quiet mail for 14 days. A long press on a notification offers Delete (to your mailbox's Trash), Archive, Mark read and Open.
Summarise a long email
In an opened email of more than about 120 words, tap Summarise for two or three plain lines (a newsletter's top items). Nothing is summarised until you tap, and a saved summary shows straight away next time. Short mail, your own mail and drafts have no Summarise button.
Calendar and reminders
Your calendars in one place
The Calendar screen shows Jango's events and every calendar on your phone (iCloud, Google, Outlook or Exchange, subscribed, birthdays, holidays) as one timeline. A pill says how many you are showing, for example Showing 6 of 8 calendars, and Adds to says where new events go. Tap the pill to open Calendars: calendars grouped by account, with Show and Keep me free on each, Add new events to, and Connect a calendar (a Yes or No for each calendar account on your phone).
When two calendars hold the same event, it is shown once with “Also in: Google, iCloud”. Press and hold it to undo a merge. This only changes what you see: no event is changed or deleted in any calendar.
Booking links
Make a link anyone can use to book a time with you on the Booking links screen. Your page at heyjango.com/book/ followed by your name shows only your free times, in the visitor's own time zone. A chosen time is held for 10 minutes while they enter their name and email, and they can cancel or move it from their confirmation. An account under 16 cannot make a link.
Pause a repeating reminder
Say “Pause the school pick-up reminders for the midterm”. A repeating event or reminder is held until the day you give, and one reminder is set at 8 am that day to turn it back on. Ask Jango to resume it earlier, or what is paused. If Jango says it could not do it, nothing changed.
People and chats
Add people
Tap Add people in People. You can show your QR code, share a link, scan someone's code, or use Someone far away: type their number (your country is filled in) and tap Search, or Find in my Contacts to see who is already on Jango. The first time you add someone this way, Jango asks you to confirm your own number with a code. When you search your Contacts, your phone sends only a scrambled form of each number, never names or the address book. Say “show my QR code” or “scan a code” to go there by voice.
When a scan does not work, the message now says why:
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| That is your own code. | Ask the other person to show theirs, or show yours to them. |
| That code has run out. | Ask them to show it again. |
| That code has been used up. | Ask them to show a new one. |
| That code isn't valid. | Ask them to show it again. |
| Too many tries for now. | Wait a little while and scan again. |
| No connection. | Check your internet and scan again. |
“Security code changed”
The first time you use a contact's (or a group member's) chat key, your phone remembers it. If a different key shows up later, for example because the person got a new phone, Jango holds it: messages to that person wait, in order, and the chat shows “<name>'s security code changed” with Check the code and Accept. Compare the code with the person in person or by a call you trust, then accept. If you do not know why it changed, do not accept it. Group info shows Security code changed beside the member.
Scroll back, and jump to a day
Scroll up in the main conversation and earlier lines load as you go (“Loading earlier”) until “Start of your history”. To go to a day, tap Jump to date (the calendar button) or press and hold a day mark, or say “Show me what we said on 3 October” or “what did we say yesterday”. The view stays where you scrolled while you drag or flick, while older lines are being added above, and when you are far from the bottom; the automatic return to the newest message after a pause waits until you stop scrolling.
Which maps app opens
When Jango opens a place or a route, it goes to the maps app you chose, and the Google Maps app until you choose. The first time with no choice, a sheet and a spoken question ask once. Change it any time in Settings, Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps or Google Maps in the browser.
News and deliveries
Major world news alerts
Unless you stop it, Jango may notify you of major world news without being asked: a war or ceasefire, a disaster with 50 or more deaths, a head of state or government changing, an election result, a market crash, a major terror attack or a pandemic declaration. It does this only when a news agency or at least three approved outlets carry the story, and only if it is under 6 hours old. These count inside the same three news notifications a day as your own topics, and are never sent between 10 pm and 7:30 am. Opinion, analysis, speculation and sport or celebrity stories are left out. The notice shows the public headline and its outlets, and tapping it opens News.
To stop them: open Privacy, News alerts, and tap Stop on the Major world news row, or ask Jango to stop major world news alerts. You can ask it to turn them back on.
Deliveries move to Delivered by themselves
When your connected mail has a delivered, out for delivery, delayed or attempted email for an order, Jango moves the matching order on the Orders screen. If two orders could match, nothing moves and each gets a note. The order shows where its status came from (from email, or from the tracking page) and you can tap Not delivered yet to put it back: that email is then remembered as wrong and a tracking page saying delivered is held off for 24 hours.
About once a day, for an order that is still on its way, Jango also reads the carrier's public tracking page. The email wins: a page never takes back an email's Delivered, it only adds “Check: page says in transit”. Tickets and other digital orders are never shown as on their way. To stop tracking an order, delete it or ask Jango.
Sound, banner and microphone
The volume bar and sound set-up
Jango now sets up the phone's sound only when something has changed, instead of each time you open the app or move between pages. Jango never sets the phone's volume itself. This is meant to stop the volume bar appearing when you open the app or change page. If it still happens, tell us through the support form with what you were doing.
The Lock Screen and Dynamic Island banner
While Jango listens behind another app, a banner on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island shows it. It is drawn by your phone only. If the app is closed, the banner stops showing what Jango is doing within about 3 minutes and says “Jango is closed. Tap to open.” (while the app runs, the banner is refreshed every minute). You can turn it off in Settings, Voice, Show “listening” when I'm in another app.
Bluetooth, AirPods and the car
When your microphone changes (AirPods connecting, the car, a speaker), the always-on ear now listens only in a format that matches the microphone, checked again just before it starts, and waits and retries if it cannot. This was added after crashes when the microphone changed. If Jango stops listening after a change, open the app once, and report it if it repeats.
On a computer
Use Jango on a computer
- On the computer, open heyjango.com/app. It shows an eight-character code.
- On your iPhone: the person icon, Sign in and phones, Link a web browser, and type the code. Only type a code that is on your own screen.
- The browser now shows the same conversation, memory, lists and tasks. It appears under “Phones and browsers signed in”, where you can sign it out at any time.
Voice in the browser: press the microphone for each thing you say (Chrome, Edge and Safari; in Firefox you type). The browser asks for new messages every 20 seconds, so a line said on your phone can take a moment to show. To make it open in its own window, install it from the browser: in Chrome or Edge click the install icon at the right end of the address bar (or the three dots, Apps, Install this site as an app); in Safari on a Mac use File, Add to Dock. A downloadable desktop app is not available yet.
Your data
- See and control it: open Privacy in the app. It lists what Jango can use, your consent record, your export and Delete everything. The Privacy Centre says what is kept, where and for how long.
- Mail marks on your phone (boxes, the list of mail you deleted or unsubscribed from, Quiet mail) stay on your phone (the lists themselves are never sent to us) and go when you choose Delete everything. The marks for deleted and unsubscribed mail also expire on their own, within 30 days.
- Crash and freeze notes: when the app crashes, freezes or an action fails, a small note without anything you said, typed or were shown is counted. Test versions add the last 50 steps before a crash, as names and numbers only. See the Privacy Centre, “Crashes, freezes and failed actions”.
- Parents: how a parent gives consent for a child under 16.
Recent fixes
- In Notes, the circle, bullet or number and the cursor on a line share one line.
- In Calculator, History and Simple/Advanced are each one glass button, not two layers.
- The morning brief no longer repeats an old note or names a date that has already passed.
- The Home screen has a Reminders button beside the keyboard button in the voice row, and market prices there appear only if you track markets.
- Sky Lens and other screens: a spoken call or command now shows the orb and a tap straight away (see “shows that it heard you”).
- Scrolling back to the first sentence of a chat no longer jumps you to the newest message.
- The banner on the Lock Screen stops showing a listening state within minutes of the app being closed.
- Deleted and unsubscribed email no longer comes back to the list.
